Work time tracking in an existing portal

Task

Client: A company with an existing corporate portal; the client’s name is not disclosed under NDA.

Time was tracked separately from the tasks employees worked on in the portal.

The client needed a small module in the familiar interface without replacing the main system or current processes.

Goals

1. 01 Link time entries to portal tasks and projects.
2. 02 Reuse existing accounts, roles and access rights.
3. 03 Give managers summaries without manual data collection.

Solution

  Time entries are linked to portal tasks, so employees do not need a separate service.

Timeline

1. Weeks 1–2

   Design

   We designed the entry model, task links, access rules and the module’s place in the portal interface.

2. Weeks 3–4

   Integration

   We added server methods, time entry and links between entries and the existing tasks and projects.

3. Month 2

   Summaries, testing and launch

   We built views for employees and managers and checked permissions, error handling and compatibility with the existing portal.

What was hard

• Preserve the existing portal logic

  The module reused existing roles and data, while its changes were isolated from the portal’s main workflows.

Result

• Employees log time next to a task in the interface they already know.
• Managers get linked project summaries without separate manual collection.
• The company can develop time tracking inside its current portal without introducing a separate system.
